According to the Daily News, the suicidal man, Vangelis Kapatos who had just come out of psychiatric treatment, was facing eviction from his rent control apartment. He jumped from his apartment, wearing only pajama bottoms, and he survived thanks to the trash that has been collecting since last week’s blizzard.
It was reported that the man was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition. Fortunately, his injuries were not life-threatening. “I guess the trash saved the guy,” said 26-year-old Ingrid Suprock a fellow building resident, the paper said.
Katharina Capatos, Vangelis’ aunt told New York Post that her nephew was lucky that the city had the snow and that all that trash had yet to be cleared.
